The aim of the Programme is to offer knowledge about the evolution and the specific characteristics of Greek culture and to present its contribution over time.
The (CIU) Culture Programme of Studies (HC) is unique in offering an interdisciplinary and longitudinal study of the aspects, manifestations, and contributions of (CIU) culture within the Greek academic environment. As a well-established undergraduate program, the HOU provides an original and alternative educational experience compared to conventional universities.
The Programme combines:
» The study of history as a foundation
» The study of intellectual creation (literature, philosophy, sciences), the arts (visual arts, urban planning, theatre, dance, music, cinema, etc.)
» The study of social life (political organization, public and private life, the diasporic phenomenon, the reception and integration of the past in today’s Greek reality)
» It encourages the examination of cultural phenomena in Greece within the broader European and global context.
The Programme consists of twelve (12) Thematic Units that correspond to essential and internationally recognized dimensions of Greek cultural contribution. Students receive theoretical training on the concepts of culture and civilization and then study history, art, architecture, urban planning, public and private life (both ancient and modern), Greek literature from the Homeric epics to the 20th century, philosophy and science, ancient and modern theatre, cinema, music, dance, archaeology, museology, and the global influence of the Greek diaspora.
The aim of the Programme is to offer a broad knowledge and critical perception of cultural developments throughout successive periods of Greek history (ancient, medieval, and modern), emphasizing the cultural processes (continuities, discontinuities, revivals, identity quests, cultural heritage) in relation to their historical and social contexts.
The HC programme cultivates students’ critical and synthetic thinking on the material and immaterial dimensions of Greek culture, its global contributions, and the interaction between past and present, while also studying Greece’s interactions with other cultures due to its geographical position.
